Stevia, commonly known as sweetleaf, is a great substitute for sugar because of its natural sweetness — without the calories or raising affect on blood sugar.
Plant based, it originated from the rain forests of Brazil and Paraguay. The active ingredient in stevia, stevoside, gives it its sweetness — between 100 and 200 times more than that of sugar.
Research has suggested that stevia might be helpful for diabetes.
