What is Collagen and Why Do We Need it?

AntioxidantsIf you are interested in anti-ageing products, you will probably know that the promise of many of them is to “increase collagen production”.

But what is collagen, and why do we need it? Put simply, collagen is a form of connective tissue, the glue, if you like, that holds our bodies together.  As we age, we lose collagen, and you can see the results externally as skin starts to sag and create wrinkles.  Internally, you may feel it as aches and pains as collagen’s “cushioning” of muscles and bones deteriorates.

A multi-billion pound industry has grown up around discovering ways to restore this “elixir of youth”, from creams, to drinks, to collagen pills.

But there are more natural and easy ways to prevent the loss of collagen, including avoiding sun damage to the skin, staying hydrated by drinking lots of  water, and ensuring your diet is packed full of vitamin C rich foods.

The antioxidants in fresh fruit and vegetables help to combat the free radicals in the body that actively attack collagen cells, resulting in diminished collagen production.

Your Body Can Heal Itself

Your body can heal itself

Your body can heal itself

One of the common mistakes is to believe that your body cannot heal itself.

Your body has profound healing energies and given the right tools, it can correct any imbalances and restore you back to good health.

By ensuring you are eating the right foods, correcting any vitamin and mineral deficiencies, by taking good levels of the appropriate nutrients and using herbs, when appropriate, and creating the right environment to encourage overall health, your body can heal itself.

It’s always a mistake to just treat symptoms. You are not just a group of body parts. Everything works together and when one system is thrown out of balance, the others can and will be affected.

The conventional, medical approach departmentalizes the different parts of the body and you will see a different specialist for each one. That is one of the main reasons why conventional medicine is not always effective in the long term.

We are not separate bits; we are whole people whose bits interact constantly.  So, if you were suffering from headaches and digestive problems, you would probably see two different specialists.

There may only be one cause for the problems, but because they are treated separately, there’s much less chance that the cause will be uncovered.

Gut and Skin Link in Childhood Eczema

Gut and skin link in childhood eczema

Gut and skin link in childhood eczema

New evidence highlights the link between skin and gut health, published in The British Journal of Dermatology, which says that children with eczema responded better to a combination of pre- and probiotic supplements than to a prebiotic alone.

The study included 60 children with moderate to severe eczema who received one capsule of a probiotic plus prebiotic combination or one capsule of a prebiotic alone twice daily for eight weeks.

Children’s eczema symptoms were monitored and ones who received the combination supplement improved more. By the eighth week of treatment, moderate or severe symptoms improved in 30% of those in the prebiotic group and 52% of those in the combination group.

If you or any of your family members are suffering from eczema you might consider taking a supplement containing both prebiotics and probiotics.  The one I recommend is  an advanced probiotic support from Biotics Research.

Broccoli Compound Clears Carcinogens

Broccoli compound clears carcinogens

This is a great discovery if you live in a polluted city.

New research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli, helps the body to excrete pollutants from the body.

Conducted in one of the most polluted regions of China, the study found that subjects who drank half a cup of broccoli sprout beverage excreted high levels of benzene, a carcinogen, and acrolein, a lung irritant.

A study from the World Health Organisation this year suggests that around 1 in 8 global deaths (7 million deaths every year) are the result of exposure to air pollution.

Diets rich in cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, have previously been found to reduce the risk of several chronic diseases, including cancer.

Low Bone Density is Preventable

Low bone density is preventable

Low bone density is preventable

People need to be aware that low bone density is a preventable problem affecting many women (one in two women over the age of 50 in the UK and one in five men are sufferers).

Public awareness and understanding of the problem, however, remains woefully limited.

The biggest concern is the next generation of girls, many of who will not even reach their peak bone density by the age of 25 because of lifestyle factors such as smoking, lack of exercise, poor diet and dieting due to media pressure to be stick thin.

There are a number of tests available that are extremely useful, giving you invaluable insights into understanding what is going on in your body at the moment and telling you how rapidly you are losing bone density.

Gut Bacteria Protects Against Obesity

Gut bacteria may protect against obesity

Gut bacteria may protect against obesity

Scientists have discovered a type of gut bacteria, Akkermansia muciniphila, that could protect against obesity and help treat type-2 diabetes.

Apparently, foods that stimulate the production of the bacteria in the digestive system could help burn off pounds as they discovered a deficiency of it in obese and type-2 diabetic mice.

Feeding the mice prebiotics (including FOS and inulin) — found in foods such as bananas, onions, leeks, asparagus and Jerusalem artichokes encouraged the metabolism-boosting bacteria.

The researchers said the results indicate A. muciniphila could play a key role in gut barrier function, metabolic inflammation and fat storage.

Modern Eating Habits Depleting Magnesium

Modern eating habits depleting magnesium

Modern eating habits depleting magnesium

The dental implants pittsburgh pa is a very important as it helps keep your heart rhythm steady, is vital for healthy bones and teeth, muscle function, the nervous system, the production of energy, and it also impacts psychological health.
Unfortunately many of us — as many as 11 per cent of women and 16 per cent of men — are magnesium deficient, according to the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

The figures are even worse for young people, particularly young women, with 51 per cent of girls aged 11 to 18 thought to have an inadequate intake, compared with 28 per cent of boys.

Our modern eating habits, with their excess salt, coffee and alcohol can also lower our magnesium levels, according to a review of international research by the University of Maryland Medical Centre, as they encourage urination and therefore wash away the mineral.

Consumption of low magnesium foods such as commercially-prepared baked items also contribute.

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include muscle weakness, cramps, depression and fatigue.  Make sure you include magnesium-rich foods in your diet such as dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds, fish and beans.

Eat Your Your Greens and Your Whites!

Eat your greens and your whites

Eat your greens and your whites

Don’t forget to add white vegetables to your meals as well as greens.

Researchers say that they are often overlooked, yet cauliflower, onions, mushrooms and turnips all contribute important amounts of essential nutrients and are good sources of fibre.

The team, from Purdue University in Indiana, U.S., say that white vegetables are a ‘forgotten source of nutrients’, but that they actually represent a ‘nutrient powerhouse in their own right’.

Writing in the journal Advances in Nutrition, Professor Connie Weaver said “It’s recommended that the variety of fruits and vegetables consumed daily should include dark green and orange vegetables, but no such recommendation exists for white vegetables, even though they are rich in fibre, potassium and magnesium.”

Is Vitamin D Deficiency a Hidden Epidemic?

Is vitamin d deficiency a hidden epidemic

Is vitamin d deficiency a hidden epidemic

While we are often hearing about deadly heatwaves down under, apparently Australia is in the grip of a hidden epidemic of vitamin D deficiency.

A recent study has found up to 58% of Australians could be vitamin D deficient during the Spring months.

Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine and author of The Vitamin D Solution, Prof Holick has called for annual testing of all Australians.

The study, co-authored by Prof Holick and conducted by Boston University, found that improving vitamin D levels could positively impact the genes associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases.

“For the first time, this study shows direct evidence that improving vitamin D levels plays a large role in improving immunity and lowering the risk for many diseases.  It is not just the bone health vitamin,” Prof Holick said.

I would recommend you get your vitamin D tested and then correct it if you are found to be deficient.  It is such an important vitamin for every aspect of your health that you can’t afford to be deficient.  There is a simple home finger prick test for vitamin D.

Why Do You Have Fat Around Your Middle?

Why do you have fat around your middle

Why do you have fat around your middle?

You don’t have to be overweight to have fat around your middle.

Even a lean woman (or man) of normal weight can have too much in the centre of the body and this still carries risks.

It has to do with the action of stress hormones in your body, particularly the stress hormone cortisol.

When we get stressed, our bodies go into “fight or flight” mode, releasing adrenaline and cortisol, which helps us deal efficiently with the physical effort involved in fighting or fleeing.

But when that effort doesn’t come, the extra energy (in the form of glucose and fat) just gets redeposited as fat — around the middle.

Why there?  Because it’s close to the liver where it can most quickly be converted back into energy if needed. And what’s more, cortisol levels stay elevated once the “threat” has passed because it thinks you have been running or fighting for your life and you need increased appetite to stock up again.

Unfortunately, the kind of chronic stress that many of us live under these days produces constantly elevated cortisol levels.  The associated increased appetite and comparatively little physical exercise, results in that bulge around the middle.
