Four lifestyle changes for a longer life

A large, multi-centre study led by Johns Hopkins researchers has found a significant link between lifestyle factors and heart health. 

People who adopt them are 80 per cent less likely to die from any cause over the next eight years compared to people who don’t follow any of them.

There are no surprises in the four lifestyle choices: not smoking, regular exercise, eating a Mediterranean-style diet, and keeping a normal weight.

However, just a tiny two per cent of the 6,200 people reviewed were following all four of these choices.

The most damaging is smoking, and even smokers who adopted two of the other three healthy choices still died sooner than non-smokers who did no exercise and were overweight.
