SO, the latest news today is that chilli peppers may help those trying to lose weight.
But before you get all excited and rush to your nearest Mexican restaurant take a few minutes to read the facts.
Hot peppers such as jalapino and habenero chillies contain a substance called capsaicin. This adds spice to food but also makes the body heat up. It now looks like this body generating heat may help with some of the those ever-expanding waist lines.
Researchers at the UCLA Center for Human nutrition looked at the abilities of chillies to increase heat production in those on weight-loss diets. They found those eating the highest levels of DCT (dihydrocapsiate), a substance found in chillies believed to have a weight loss potential, had a higher energy expenditure after eating. They also found DCT (which is not the hot part) significantly increased fat oxidation and encouraged the body to use more fat as fuel. So, the bottom line is chillies may be beneficial in increasing metabolism as part of a healthy diet.
Don’t forget the ‘healthy diet’ bit. If chillies worked that well all Mexicans would be lean and fit … And trust me of this one … they’re not!
