Broccoli compound clears carcinogens

Most of us don’t really think of broccoli as a superfood.

If fact most of us probably don’t think about broccoli much at all…

Well, this often overlooked cruciferous vegetable is rich in antioxidants and carotenoids and research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center has found a compound from broccoli could prevent or treat breast cancer.

The study tested sulforaphane and found that it targeted and killed cancer stem cells – the small number of cells that promote a tumour’s growth.

The results are featured in the May issue of Clinical Cancer Research.
