How To Digest Food Better

How to digest food better

How to digest food better

A reminder about chewing well…

The first part of digestion happens in the mouth. To have healthy digestion it is really important to chew well. So take your time when you eat, slow down and your food will be digested better.

Chewing also signals the other parts of your digestive system to get ready to receive food.

So, if you are not chewing well, the first part of breakdown in the mouth doesn’t happen, the digestive system does not get the signal to prepare itself and the food will drop down to the stomach in larger molecules than the stomach can really manage.

Another advantage of eating slowly is you are less likely to overeat. Once you start eating it takes 20 minutes for your brain to register that you are full. So if you eat slowly you will end up eating less food because your brain will tell you that you have had enough.

If you eat quickly, you can consume a lot more food than you actually need before your brain realises. There is a big difference between hunger and appetite. Hunger is when your stomach rumbles and you need to eat. Appetite is when you want to eat because you fancy some ice cream because you just saw an advert on TV.

Time To Get Rid of Tummy Fat

Time to get rid of tummy fat

Time to get rid of tummy fat

I hate to have to tell you this, but tummy fat really is toxic fat.

The fat around your middle manufactures an array of chemical messengers including blood-clotting agents, substances that contract blood vessels and raise blood pressure, inflammatory agents, hormones and molecules that control hunger.

Fat cells are also able to produce an immune response in the body, which causes inflammation. Fat cells also secrete oestrogen and two other compounds — tumour necrosis factor alpha and resistin — both of which interfere with the functioning of insulin.

Not all fat in the body behaves in the same way and it is the fat around the middle that is more metabolically active than fat elsewhere. It has been called “toxic fat” because it increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, and diabetes.

Train Your Brain to Reverse Junk Food Addiction

Train Your Brain to Reverse Junk Food Addiction

Train Your Brain to Reverse Junk Food Addiction

A brain scan study of adult men and women, published online in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes, suggests that it is possible to reverse the addictive power of unhealthy food while also encouraging a preference for healthy foods.

Tufts University researchers studied 13 overweight and obese men and women. Eight of them participated in a new weight-loss programme designed by the researchers, and the other five were the control group.

Brain MRI before and after the 6-month trial showed that the reward centre associated with learning and addiction had changed in the weight-loss programme participants. In fact, this area now had increased sensitivity to healthy, lower-calorie foods, finding them more rewarding.

The Tufts weight loss programme, based around high-fibre and low glycaemic menu plans, was specially designed to change how people react to different foods, and the results of the study gave researchers reason to be optimistic that the brain may be retrained to increase desire for healthier foods and decrease preference for unhealthy foods, both critical for sustainable weight control.

More Health Benefits of Manuka Honey

More benefits of manuka honey

More benefits of manuka honey

Researchers at Cardiff Metropolitan University have found that manuka honey is effective in combating the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes, which can make wounds hard to treat.

This condition has worsened because of resistance to antibiotics; however, it seems that manuka honey can actually penetrate that resistance and kill the bacteria, even in small concentrations.

Other benefits include no instances of honey-resistant bacteria, honey is more cost-effective than antibiotics and may also complement antibiotic treatment.

If you want to use manuka honey for wound care, it is recommended that you use a medical grade product. For more information on medical grade honey, Manuka Honey World has a great article and tells you where you can get it from.

Avoid Chemicals Especially If You Are Pregnant

Avoid chemicals if you're pregnant

Avoid chemicals if you’re pregnant

I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for all of us to avoid — as best we can — the toxic chemicals that surround us.

We microwave plastic, we cover our fatty foods with cling film, we let water bottled in plastic sit in the sunshine… We bring dreadful chemicals into our homes every day as cleaning products, air ‘fresheners and even soaps and cosmetics.

Read the list of ingredients on everything you buy and you will find little or nothing on the High Street that isn’t full of potentially harmful ingredients.

Now, pregnant women are being warned not to use antibacterial soaps because they contain triclosan, a chemical that hinders an enzyme called oestrogen sulfotransferase that helps metabolise oestrogen and move it through the placenta into the developing foetus. There, the oestrogen plays a crucial role in brain development and the regulation
of genes.

However, triclosan and triclocarban are used in more than 2,000 everyday products marketed as antimicrobial, including toothpastes, soaps, detergents, carpets, paints, school supplies and toys, so frankly, antibacterial soap is just the tip of the iceberg. And they may also be responsible for the growing antibiotic resistance we are seeing today.

Published in the journal Environment International, the German and Danish study tested almost 100 everyday chemicals — and discovered that a third affected sperm, suggesting that the endless number and amount of chemicals in products we use every day may be contributing to the widespread fertility problems in the Western world.

So please, pregnant or not, spend a little extra time and possibly money on organic household cleansers, soaps, cosmetics and especially baby products — yes, they are full of chemical nasties too…

Pregnant? Don’t Put Your Feet Up

Pregnant? Dont put your feet up

Pregnant? Don’t put your feet up

While it’s standard advice for pregnant women to “put their feet up”, according to new research, bed rest can increase risk of blood clots, depression, diabetes and having babies with a lower birth weight.

Birth injuries such as Cerebral Palsy, Erb’s Palsy, hypoxia, paralysis, shoulder dystocia and related injuries are complex matters. Make no mistake, doctors and hospitals will do everything possible to hide behind a wall of highly paid defense lawyers and their insurance company. If you believe your child suffered a birth injury as a result of medical mistake, the doctor and hospital is going to do everything they can to evade responsibility. Call Maryland Birth Injury to defend you and your child.

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the United States says it no longer recommends routinely limiting physical activity for mothers, even if they have been put on bed rest as a result of complications.

Not only, do they say, that there is no evidence that bed rest improves outcomes but also that there is evidence that it can be harmful to both mother and baby. Too little activity can quickly result in de-conditioning with loss of muscle and bone mass and may also increase the risk of developing blood clots in the legs which could be fatal should they move to the lungs.

There are studies to show that even patients who are not pregnant but are confined to bed have a greater chance of developing high blood sugar levels, a key risk factor for diabetes.

Stop Dieting

Stop dieting

Stop dieting

Diets don’t work. Up to a third of all women who diet end up weighing several kilos more after they diet than they did before.

Dieting — defined as energy in = less than energy out, in other words, a severe restriction of food — is a biologically unnatural state. Your body thinks there’s a famine. It simply does not give your body enough fuel to do the jobs it needs to do.

Your mind and body hear alarm bells and go into survival mode: holding onto the weight you have, slowing your metabolism and telling you to eat, eat, eat.  So if you really want to lose weight, and specifically fat around the middle, then restricting your food intake is the last thing you should do.

Stand Up and Live Longer

Stand up and live longer

Stand up and live longer

A new study published in the British Medical Journal shows that standing up — and spending less time sitting down — could be the key to a longer life.

Researchers from Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm even went so far as to say that it is more beneficial to stand up for prolonged periods each day but do no actual exercise than it is to exercise regularly but then sit down a lot for the rest of the day.

They added that sedentary behaviour is an important and new health hazard of our time.

It’s all to do with the lengthening of telomeres, DNA storage units in the body.  The study found that the less time a person spent sitting, the longer their telomeres, and the greater their chance of living longer.

How Does Stress Cause Fat Around the Middle?

How does stress cause fat around the middle

How does stress cause fat around the middle

So just how does stress cause fat around your tummy?

What happens is that after a while of experiencing chronic stress, high levels of blood sugar released by cortisol will trigger the pancreas to release more of the hormone insulin. This tells your body to store fat and triggers a craving for something sweet and fatty like chocolate.

So rest assured that it is not just weakness that draws you towards the fridge — it is an unassailable physical urge…

Unfortunately abdominal fat cells have many receptors for cortisol, so if you’re too stressed and have high levels of cortisol, your abdominal fat cells will be calling out for it, encouraging your body to store more fat there, which explains why fat accumulates so readily in that part of the body.

Caffeine May Double Diabetes Risk

Caffeine may double diabetes risk

Caffeine may double diabetes risk

Heavy caffeine users who drink more than three cups of coffee a day have a 50% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to Italian researchers from San Daniele Cardiology Hospital in Udine.

The researchers studied 1,180 patients aged between 18 and 45 who all had stage one hypertension but not diabetes. Over the course of six years, scientists diagnosed pre-diabetes in 24% of the sample group, with moderate coffee drinkers having a 34% increased risk of developing the condition and heavy caffeine drinkers a 50% heightened risk.

In a previous analysis the Udine team found that coffee was a risk factor for the development of sustained hypertension (high blood pressure). The risk is even greater for people who are overweight.

The report concluded that young to middle-aged people with high blood pressure should be aware that coffee consumption may increase their risk of developing diabetes in later life.
